Sample Prescribing Learning Needs Analysis
What additional work or learning is required to build on skills and knowledge for me to be a prescriber?
Clinical Skills: Develop proficiency in clinical history-taking, patient assessment, and basic physical examination techniques (e.g., using a stethoscope, otoscope).
Clinical Decision-Making: Deepen my ability to apply evidence-based medicine (NICE/SIGN guidelines), conduct risk-benefit analyses, and make patient-centred decisions for medicines optimisation.
Consultation Skills: Refine consultation models to effectively conduct a full clinical review, not just a medication-focused one.
When do I envision to undertake this learning?
Focus on building foundational skills through shadowing, case-based discussions, and targeted e-learning modules.
Through mandatory regional study days, and also study days
Where will I undertake this learning (i.e. during what rotation, if applicable)?
GP Placement: The primary setting for shadowing consultations, practising clinical assessment skills, and participating in multi-disciplinary team (MDT) meetings. Focus on observing the diagnostic and decision-making process.
Community Pharmacy Placement: Refine consultation skills during patient interactions, OTC consultations, and advanced services. Focus on applied pharmacology and identifying prescribing errors/opportunities during clinical checks.
Self-Directed/Online: Complete e-learning modules on clinical assessment, consultation skills, and specific therapeutic areas relevant to my future scope.
Who will supervise my learning (if not the DPP, please provide details of who this would be)?
DPP and also during placements supervised by and learn from the prescribers (e.g., GPs, Advanced Nurse Practitioners, and other Independent Prescriber Pharmacists).
What else will I need to do to contribute to my log of prescribing hours?
Document all shadowing activities, focusing on the prescriber's decision-making process.
Participate in case-based discussions with prescribers after observing consultations or reviewing patient notes.
Review medicines reconciliation and eDAN reviews, documenting clinical recommendations and discussing them with the responsible prescriber.
Conduct clinical medication reviews under supervision and propose evidence-based changes to therapy.
Create reflective accounts linking my observations and activities to the GPhC's standards for prescribers.
